If your days off are filled with dirt trails, downhill tracks, mountain climbs or cross country rides, you want to get the best of each and every moment on your bike. Your handlebars are one of your main contact points on the bike and have a huge impact on how it handles. One of the most basic upgrades or changes you can make to improve your handling is your mountain bike grips. We've compiled a list of the best mountain bike grips below.

Lock-on vs Slide-on

Changing your bike grips may seem trivial but having the right type can really up your performance and control of your ride. Back in the day, the only types of grip available were 'slide-on' grips, which believe it or not, just slide on the bars (with a bit of brute force). These grips can, unfortunately, move about when gripping the bars and so now the most popular type of grip is a 'lock-on'.  Lock-on grips are made with a firm inner sleeve and are secured at one or both ends with a metal collar. These do as they say on the tin and really lock the grip in place, meaning your hands are less likely to slip out of position when tackling challenging terrain.

Fat vs. Thin

As with saddles, thicker grips doesn't necessarily mean more comfort. If you have smaller hands, fat grips can be difficult to get your whole hand around comfortably and can make joints feel tired. Vise versa for those with large hands, thin grips may not take as much impact as you'd like.
